Hunter Community Gardening

Jason Lang founded the Hunter Community Enterprise in 2016 to provide high-quality local services throughout East Kilbride and to offer person-centered, bespoke employment, training and development opportunities for those facing barriers to employment.

Hunter Community Enterprise aims to expand into a variety of market areas in order to address local social problems within the town. Harnessing the skills and capacity within the community to provide lasting sustainable solutions to the challenges people are facing. Jason prides his social enterprise on having a quality provision of services, investing in people, and ensuring profits are benefiting the community in the best way. The first initiative of the CIC was the Hunter Community Gardening, which launched in 2017, and provides low-cost quality gardening services for those who need it most. They achieve this by providing high-quality garden maintenance for their financially able customers, as well as low-cost services to demographics that cannot usually afford gardening services, e.g. the elderly.

Alongside offering this reduced-cost gardening programme, Hunter Community Enterprise develops employability skills for those facing barriers to employment, that improves confidence and mental health. They are currently looking to expand this into a bespoke employability programme, which will include employability skills, transferable work skills, practical work-based training, and an opportunity for reflection and coaching.

Jason has secured funding through Firstport at both Start it and Build It programmes in 2017. With the help from the LaunchMe programme, the social enterprise is looking for investment to triple its outreach, and scale the business to reach more local people and develop some of these longer-term employment programmes.
