Pearl McGibbon – Girvan Farmers Market

Pearl McGibbon has been in business all her life and following retirement, aged 70, she was looking for a new adventure. With help from What If...Girvan, Pearl has organised a weekly indoors farmer’s market, based in the Town House, Girvan.

The weekly event launched during Easter in 2017 and saw 150 people attend on its first day. In the lead up to Christmas she has been running festive-themed days.

The market allows local producers, as well as artists and craft makers, to get their products in front of both locals and visitors. Pearl wants the market to help bring Girvan back as a destination for tourists and holidaymakers. She has been working with bus tour operators to encourage tourists to stop in the town and visit the market on a Friday.

As part of her future plans, Pearl is also looking to create a community farm to supply more fresh produce at the weekly gathering.

Pearl explained: "I am really pleased with the outcome so far. There are people who come every week, fortnight and month, but we would love even more people to come, rent a table for just £15, and get involved.

"Everything we sell is home grown and handmade. This is all about promoting small local businesses. If we set up a community farm, we will grow even more of our own produce."

The market runs on Fridays from 10am until 3.30pm in the Town House on Girvan's Knockcushan Street, but will be taking a break over the New Year. Find out more on the Facebook page.
