Buth Bharraigh

Set up by Sarah MacLean. Buth Bharraigh is a social enterprise that creates opportunities for local people on the Island of Barra.

It includes a retail outlet for locally produced items and convenient access to local produce, wholefoods and other items island residents find hard to source otherwise. Local producers receive 70% to 80% of sale price on their goods. It also provides employment and work placements and meaningful volunteering opportunities.

Future plans are to develop Buth Bharraigh into a holistic produce hub that will champion skills, promote seasonal produce and provide opportunities to make the most of island resources.

The new purpose-built premises will include retail space and food processing facilities so that Buth Bharraigh can process and/or add value to local produce. These facilities would also be available for local producers to rent and hold training events such as cookery schools and food hygiene courses. The hub would also contain craft and enterprise workshops to develop local skills, along with a community café and exhibition/office space for sister organisations and outdoor growing space.

Director Sarah MacLean said:

Getting onto LaunchMe will help us achieve our ambition by giving us access to excellent as the business and peer support. Living where we do it is easy to feel isolated and out of the loop. For us gaining access to support and training is costly and not easy. The funding will allow us to employ a development officer to work on plans for new premises.

This opportunity will be wonderful for us and give us the support and confidence to move forward. We want to provide our island with opportunities: a local produce hub that will inspire and have a positive effect on island sustainability.
