Susan Aktemel - Homes for Good

Susan Aktemel came up with the idea of setting up Scotland's first social enterprise letting agency as a result of her own personal experience as a landlord.

“I couldn’t find a letting agency I liked. The private rental market is growing very fast and landlords have such a negative image - I felt the time was right for a different sort of agency.”

Homes for Good started trading in March 2013 from Susan’s house and provides social and affordable housing in Glasgow and the surrounding areas. The initial challenge for Susan was identifying landlords and convincing them to let her manage their properties. Since then the business has grown through word of mouth.

“It’s really simple. We supply a high-quality service, matching properties with the right tenant, creating happy homes for tenants and sound investments for landlords. We also specialise in supporting vulnerable and young people to access safe, secure homes they can flourish in.”

Susan wants to make Homes for Good a market leader in the private rental sector across the UK, with plans to expand and replicate the business model in other areas. Susan was accepted onto the first round of LaunchMe programme back in 2014. 

“Getting onto the LaunchMe programme was really important for us. If we were to grow and become a national presence, we needed the financial and business support that LaunchMe could offer. We were also keen to work with a like-minded peer group of social entrepreneurs and learn from them.”

Since taking part in LaunchMe, Homes for Good has gone from strength to strength. In November 2016, Homes for Good was named Social Enterprise of the Year at the Social Enterprise Awards Scotland and expanded into new premises in the Bridgeton Community in early 2017. In July 2018 they received a milestone £2.85 million investment from Social and Sustainable Capital - their first investment in a Scottish enterprise.

“We were really delighted to welcome SASC as our investor in the next stage of growth within Homes for Good. Since 2014, we have brought 190 properties back to life. We plan to acquire a further 50 homes with this latest significant investment, which will help us work towards our goal of owning 500 homes for people on low income by 2022.”
